Thanks to Craig Skinner for showing me this property, between Mansfield and Newborn.

What was once the main house of a large working farm was later used as a tenant residence.

I believe it was occupied until the 1980s.

Blackwell Grocery, Mansfield

mansfield ga blackwell grocery photograph copyright brian brown vanishing north georgia usa 2016

It’s not very often that I find a place like this. Blackwell Grocery, though, is the real deal. It’s a grocery store located in a hundred-year-old building in a small downtown, and it’s without pretense. Today, most places like this are made to look old and sell specialty items that are more geared to tourists than normal folk. Not so Blackwell Grocery. For over thirty years they’ve been a staple in Mansfield but they plan on building in a new location soon.

I don’t know when I’ve seen hand-written signs in a grocery store. And there were just four aisles, if I recall correctly.

They don’t have as much as the big box stores, but they probably have anything you might need.

Commercial Block, Mansfield

I’m not sure what this structure originally served as, but it’s now occupied by Air Power, Inc., a leading distributor of specialized industrial equipment. The building has been nicely restored.

Ava Campbell writes: [It was the] Pacific Uniform plant in the 50’s and 60’s if I’m remembering correctly. It employed many women from the area inc. Newborn, Shady Dale and Covington.

Hays Tractor & Equipment has been in business since 1951 and is a third generation female-owned business. The building likely dates to the turn of the last century, when Mansfield was settled.

John Gay House, 1840s, Newborn

I haven’t been able to locate much information about John Gay, but I believe he served in the Confederate army. Also, I’m unable to validate an exact date of construction. The National Register nomination form lists both 1840 and 1850.

Newborn United Methodist Church, 1902, Newton County

Established in 1820, Newborn United Methodist is the oldest church in Newton County. This is the third church to have been built on this site. When Newborn was known as Sandtown, pioneer members of the Methodist Episcopal congregation built a log cabin church here. It was replaced by a more permanent structure in 1847, and the present church was built in 1902 and dedicated in 1903.

Childs General Store was one of the first retail establishments built in Newborn before the railroad came through the town in 1893 and was restored after a fire in the 1990s. Now known as the Zeigler-Childs Building and home to the Newborn Town Hall and Library, it remains a symbol of the community.

The old post office and drugstore is on the left and the slightly more modern commercial block has housed a grocery store and on the far right, the present-day post office.
