Martin was settled by Henry C. Black, the agent for the Atlanta & Charlotte Air Line Railroad when the station was established in 1877. It was incorporated in 1891 and named for early governor John Martin, a native of Rhode Island who was elected in 1782.

The Elberton Air Line was opened in December 1878 with the assistance of the Atlanta & Charlotte Air-Line Railway. This soon merged with the Southern Railway and this depot served the line until the middle of the 20th century. According to the National Register nomination form, the depot was constructed in 1877.

Doyle Street, Toccoa

Toccoa GA Doyle Street Revitalization BJ's Family Restaurant Best Food in Town Photograph Copyright Brian Brown Vanishing North Georgia USA 2014

Sometimes called Toccoa’s Main Street, Doyle Street was once closed to vehicular traffic and covered with concrete canopies. The removal of these monstrosities was the beginning of a long-time revitalization plan which culminated in Toccoa being named one of the top 10 “Main Streets” in the nation. It’s an ongoing process and is very inspiring. (Travel Note: If you’re in Toccoa, don’t miss a breakfast or lunch at BJ’s Family Restaurant, seen on the far right above. I had the best breakfast I’ve ever eaten there, and the staff treats everyone like they’re locals).

Ritz Theater, 1939, Toccoa

Schaefer Center Old Theatre Toccoa GA Under Restoration Photograph Copyright Brian Brown Vanishing North Georgia USA 2014

Now known as the Schaefer Center, the old Ritz Theatre operated from 1939 until 1985. I made a series of photographs for the Fox Theatre Institute in 2011 and 2012 when restoration was in progress and haven’t been back since it has reopened. The most glaring absence is the old marquee on the front of the structure, which I hope will soon be replaced, as it’s completely integral to the building’s appearance . I hope to visit again soon and share “after” photos.
