Gallant-Belk Building, Hartwell

The Gallant-Belk department store was located on the first floor of this building and the Hartwell Garment Company, a sewing factory, operated upstairs. It’s an antique store today.

Forest Avenue Storefronts, Hartwell

In contrast to many small towns throughout Georgia, Hartwell has an active and busy downtown, with nearly all the buildings around the courthouse still occupied.

Hartwell Bank Building, Hartwell

Known today as the Carter Law Office, for its present owner, this is the most iconic commercial structure in Hartwell. [I use the original name for historical purposes]. It was home, for many years, to Homer Herdon’s Drug Store, a popular gathering place from the 1930s to the 1960s. The second floor once housed the Hartwell Library, as well. I have been unable to confirm a date of construction, but the Richardsonian Romanesque style, in which it’s constructed, was popular from the late 1880s to the turn of the 20th century.

The structure to the right in the view above is Bailes Cobb, a popular locally-owned independent department store that’s been in business since 1929! Below (right) is The Art Center, a gallery and event space operated by the Hart Regional Arts Council.

Hailey Building, 2001, Hartwell

The first structure located here, built in 1920, was known as Hailey’s Corner. It burned in 2001 and was replaced by this structure. The style is nearly identical to the original, though that structure was built of yellow brick.

Pure Oil Service Station, Circa 1932, Hartwell

This was built by the Wofford Oil Company, known as Woco Pep. Wofford was affiliated with the Pure Oil Company. When Pure Oil merged with Union Oil in 1973, the station was slated for closing, but Martin White, who had managed the property since 1941, purchased it and kept it open for many year thereafter, at least into the late 1980s.

Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 1897, Hart County

Hartwell Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was established in 1854, the same year the town was founded. The congregation first met in the temporary courthouse, then in the first brick courthouse, until local contractor John R. Kay built their first permanent home in 1859. It was the only church in Hartwell until after the Civil War and was shared with the Baptists and Presbyterians, as well. I  presume the congregation outgrew the old frame church, as the present structure, built utilizing a design of Atlanta architect Willis F. Denny, was erected in 1897. It remains in use as Hartwell First United Methodist Church.
