This is an inquiry. I have an ancestor who was placed in the “common jail” in Appling or possibly Augusta, Georgia. This time period was Summer 1804. His name was John Peek Jr. According to Superior Court Records in Columbia, Georgia. He was accused of liable by a man named Washington Germany. John Peek Jr. could not pay the fine. He remained in the common jail until his death, Feb. 1804 according to his will. I would like to know more about this time in history. If there is any information that you can give me, I would be very much appreciative.
