Martin was settled by Henry C. Black, the agent for the Atlanta & Charlotte Air Line Railroad when the station was established in 1877. It was incorporated in 1891 and named for early governor John Martin, a native of Rhode Island who was elected in 1782.

Your Extensive Photos of Georgia are extraordinary. I was in charge of most of the restoration of The Ritz Theater In Toccoa. It was named The Schaefer Center as contract requirement when the Schaefer family sold the Theater to the Arts Council at a significantly reduced price. Dr. Schaefer was a prominent surgeon who built the Ritz. The building was closed when purchased. Restoration funds were raised from community leaders. Several years later governmental entities and A Fox Foundation donation provided funds to install the present front and marquee.
Thanks, Alton. I hope to return to Toccoa this year and get more photographs. I love Stephens County.
